In Harmony With Nature

You are only fully aware of a space when you have lived it in all weather.

We visited Allende School where children spend as much time outside as possible. They use the outdoors as the classroom and many natural materials are present. It reminded Kelley and me a lot of BHCP because of the value they place on outdoor play.

  1. Allende looks like it is in a rural setting. Is it far from the town center?

  2. Allende is outside of the city center, about 10-15 minutes from our meeting site. Its outdoor environment is unlike any we have seen in the other schools, and the staff says parents seek the school out for its setting.

  3. And, our pictures may not tell the whole story . . . There are apartment buildings just outside the fence and across a field from this play space. It is much less dense in this part of the city.

  4. What was going on with the materials arranged in and around the circle. And then in the second to last picture, what were you working on?

  5. Susan and I were inspired to create something using the natural materials they keep in bins outside the school's studio. The second to last picture is me lining up some materials in an our arrangement.
